In my previous post, I explained how a disk attached to a machine makes things difficult. Vertical scaling has its limits, and when you hit that limit, you can’t do horizontal scaling right away because of the attached disk. Mainstream databases like Postgres or MySQL don’t scale horizontally. I recently learned that BlueSky team switched from Postgres to a combination of Scylla and SQLite. One of the reasons was because (vanilla) Postgres is not horizontally scalable, but Scylla is.
Tech Companies Are Seeking To Develop AI That Excels at Flattering and Manipulating Us - The Debrief
A disturbing new use of AI—to understand and manipulate our intentions through flattery and false friendship—has been identified in new research from the University of Cambridge.
Currently, internet companies collect data about where we go online and use this data to present us with ads or other content we may be interested in. Dr. Yaqub Chaudhary and Dr Jonnie Penn, working out of Cambridge’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (LCFI), have identified startling new ways AI is seeking to control our decision-making at the earliest possible steps.
None of what I write in this newsletter is about sowing doubt or "hating," but a sober evaluation of where we are today and where we may end up on the current path. I believe that the artificial intelligence boom — which would be better described as a generative AI boom — is (as I've said before) unsustainable, and will ultimately collapse. I also fear that said collapse could be ruinous to big tech, deeply damaging to the startup ecosystem, and will further sour public support for the tech industry.

This library is a type safe wrapper for PHP Reflection API.
This library is born with the purpose to solve the problem of type safety in PHP Reflection API.
Reflection API is a very powerful tool, but presents some issues.
For example:
- the original
ReflectionClass::getConstantreturnfalseif the constant does not exist or if the constant is equal tofalse. ReflectionClass::newInstancereturn a generic object, but it is possible to know the type of the object.- New interfaces are added to the Reflection API in different PHP versions, so it is not possible to use them in a cross-version way.

The evolution of software development over the past decade has been very frustrating. Little of it seems to makes sense, even to those of us who are right in the middle of it.
We usually only notice trends and popular frameworks and libraries after they’ve exploded in popularity. By that time they’re often so far removed from their original context that their initial technical merit is a hard-to-distinguish quiet signal in the overwhelming noise of hype, grift, and false promises.
If you do take the time to trace these trends back to their early beginnings, you often discover that, no, it wasn’t just somebody’s con or VC startup pitch that happened to get traction. Usually there was something there at the beginning, however slight that “something” might have been.
