Les Seigneurs de l’Instrumentalité (titre original en anglais américain : Instrumentality of Mankind rebaptisé The Rediscovery of Man) est un cycle de science-fiction écrit par Cordwainer Smith. Composé de 27 nouvelles et du roman Norstralie, il raconte l’évolution de l’Humanité lors des 14 000 prochaines années. D’autres nouvelles ne faisant pas partie du cycle peuvent y être rattachées du fait de leur thématique.
Par son originalité et son ampleur programmatique, cette œuvre vaste, longtemps méconnue notamment en France, est devenue un classique de la science-fiction1.
Cordwainer Smith (prononcé CORDwainer1), né le 11 juillet 1913 à Milwaukee dans le Wisconsin et mort le 6 août 1966 à Baltimore dans le Maryland, est le nom de plume du Dr Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger pour ses ouvrages de science-fiction. Son livre Psychological Warfare, basé sur son travail dans le domaine de la propagande durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, a été publié sous son vrai nom. Ses autres pseudonymes incluent : Karloman Junghar, Felix C. Forrest, Carmichael Smith et Anthony Bearden.
In recent years, there has been an increasing tension in the PHP community on how to handle backwards-incompatible language changes. The PHP programming language has evolved somewhat haphazardly and exhibits many behaviors that are considered undesirable from a contemporary position.
Fixing these issues benefits development by making behavior more consistent, more predictable and less bugprone. On the other hand, every backwards-incompatible change to the PHP language may require adjustments in hundreds of millions of lines of existing code. This delays the migration to new PHP versions.
The general solution to this problem is to allow different libraries and applications to keep up with language changes at their own pace, while remaining interoperable. There are quite a few ways in which this general goal can be achieved, which will be discussed in the following.
